Subject: lm_sensors 2.8.2 / DESTDIR / root
The reason for this email is that I always try to avoid running
Makefiles as root, even during 'make install'. Therefore, I
always use the DESTDIR feature, when it's available. Until today,
I always built i2c and lm_sensors by doing
$ make
$ make -i install DESTDIR=/foo
$ cd /foo && su root && fix permissions/ownership && install
The -i flag to make install is a kludge to avoid having to be root
while installing to the DESTDIR, and it's only required because
the files are installed with "-o root -g root". Using the -i
flag is of course not a good idea, since more fatal errors can
easily fly by undetected.
Today, I upgraded to Linux 2.6.0, and tried a similar install
procedure for lm_sensors, except that the make target is now "user"
and the install target is "user_install". I now noticed that the
DESTDIR variable is not used everywhere in "user_install", so I
couldn't use the -i kludge anymore. Instead, I wrote a patch that
removes the "-o root -g root" arguments to install everywhere, and
I also tried to add DESTDIR to all files/directories installed.
(The patch only applies to lm_sensors, not i2c, since only
lm_sensors is required in Linux 2.6.0.)
There's really no reason to say -o root -g root anyway, since if you
do install directly with make install, you have to be logged in as
root, and then the files will get the right ownership by default.
Much of the point of installing to a temporary DESTDIR is that you
don't have to be root, and that you can prepare the installation
by hand. Fixing the ownership is trivial:
chown -R root.root $DESTDIR

vt1211 / vt8235 thermistor calculations. Add such calculations to
vt1211/vt8235 section in sensors.conf; bump library version to 1.4.0.

It seems that VERSION is now defined to LM_VERSION, so I removed this line
from the checklist.

I did a `cvs diff -r V2-5-5'. Looking at it, I see no interface changes,
but I do see new functionality. So I updated the library minor version.
The library version is now 1.2.0.

This often-asked for, long-planned and somewhat-forgotten feature
makes it possible to tell libsensors-linked applications (like
the sensors program) that certain features should not be displayed.
This is very nice for things like unconnected temperature sensors
or fans.
Modifications to the library code, to the sensors program and to
the documentation and example sensors.conf file.

Set DESTDIR if you want to install at some other place then where you
will run everything from.

* Removed several superfluous (struct i2c_client *) casts (they were left
from the time we had separate structs for smbus and isa)
* Removed the internal lists of registered clients
They have not been used for quite some time now, took memory space,
and limited the maximum number of clients that could be registered.
Also removed two small Makefile errors - I am happy I caught them before
the next release!

I finally merged in Adrian's man-pages. libsensors.3 is unchanged from his
version; sensors.conf.5 is heavily edited, not because he did a bad job,
but because his source material was not very well written :-). It should
now tell you more about the config file than you ever wanted to know...

I really hope I did not forget an add or remove. If strange things happen
when you compile, please let me know.
There may still be problems with the EXPORT_* stuff; it seems to work now
for kernel 2.0.36pre19, but it may give trouble for earlier kernels. We
need to check that.
Some i2c modules may be a bit verbose at this moment.

* (module) VIN limits are now set to sane values (3V instead of 30V, which
caused nasty overflows)
* (module) VIN limits had min/max swapped in gl518_attach_adapter
* (lib) TEMP_HYST used the VID sysctl instead of the TEMP sysctl, leading
to bogus readings
* (sensors) print n/a for gl518 not available readings.

This brings the archive into synch with my harddisk...
Everything in the lib directory should compile without problems (yes, even
without warnings even if WARN=1). It is not well-tested, though, and there
are some minor functions which must still be added. It is now almost
usable.

These are the relatively well-tested files. They allow you to parse a
configuration file, and to build an internal abstract syntax tree.
