Sam James ad8490240e Makefile: drop usage of 'which' 
`which` is an external command which isn't required by POSIX.

Debian and other distributions (like Gentoo!) are looking
to drop it from their base set of packages.

Switch to `command -v` which should always work instead.

Fabrice Fontaine e31cb3b2f8 Add support for static only build 
This patch adds support for a BUILD_SHARED_LIB variable that allows to
enable/disable the build of the shared library, in order to support
static-only builds.

Lucas Magasweran 0863eff8fa makefile: use target arch when determining what programs to compile 
To better support cross-compilation, the Makefile should detect the
compiler's target architecture instead of using `uname -m`, which
returns the host architecture. This approach uses the `gcc`/`clang`
compatible `-dumpmachine` option.

Cross-compilation worked but because of this bug, `isadump` and
`isaset` x86 ISA specific tools were built for PCC and ARM.

This run-time issue became a compile-time issue when `glibc` 2.30
removed the `sys/io.h` I/O port functions on ARM.

Also renamed `MACHINE` to `ARCH` to match cross-compiler conventions
for specifying the target architecture. For example,

`make ARCH=arm CC=arm-linux-gnueabi-gcc AR=arm-linux-gnueabi-ar`

Jean Delvare 1bb3175a5f Recent versions of module-init-tools only want *.conf files under 
/etc/modprobe.d. So rename our configuration file to lm_sensors.conf
there. Also let "make install" rename the file if it already exists.

Jean Delvare 9232f4eb43 Delete all kernel chip drivers, documentation and references. We are 
moving to a user-space-only package, all the drivers are maintained in
the Linux kernel tree itself.

I tried to update the documentation a bit, but there's still a lot to
go. In fact, a complete rewrite seems to be needed.

Mark M. Hoffman b5ff067425 Modify libsensors scanner build flags... 
* add -8
When using -Cf, flex defaults to generating a 7-bit scanner instead of 8-bit.
That's a bug, since we want the scanner to handle any character.  Using -8 restores
the proper behavior.

* change -Cf to -Cfe
This allows a nice reduction in object size (from ~60KiB to ~15KiB) with almost
no impact to speed (adds < 100 cycles to scanner, where total cycles is > 1M).

This patch makes optional the sysfs support in libsensors.  The default is to
*disable* sysfs support if a 2.4.x kernel is detected, for all other versions,
support will be enabled.  This can be overridden in the top-level Makefile.
